TUBUAI ARTIFACTS
Diagram 22.4
Adze Type 1Aa (horned)
This magnificent, large, horned Type 1A was purchased locally and is in all probability of Tubuai origin. The numerous calcareous deposits that can be seen on all surfaces are the same as those found on many other Tubuai specimens and indicate that the artifact has been deeply buried in soils mainly composed of sand (click on the above image to see enlargement). I have taken the liberty of retouching the image to remove a few scratches and small chips that probably ocurred when the artifact was disinterred by plowing.
This remarkable artifact is probably one of the most important in the whole of the Tubuai collection, being a specialized form which can be directly linked to the early settlement adzes of New Zealand. Many specialists; Duff, Skinner, Buck, to name a few, have speculated upon the origin of this particular model, the growing number of horned 1A adzes in our collection now provide ample proof that Tubuai was at one time producing this particular adze form.
